A Novel Defense of Scientific Realism

A Novel Defense of Scientific Realism

A Novel Defense of Scientific Realism by Jarrett Leplin
English | August 7, 1997 | ISBN: 0195113632 | 224 pages | PDF | 18 MB

Vigorous and controversial, this book develops a sustained argument for a realist interpretation of science, based on a new analysis of the concept of predictive novelty. Identifying a form of success achieved in science–the successful prediction of novel empirical results–which can be explained only by attributing some measure of truth to the theories that yield it, Jarrett Leplin demonstrates the incapacity of nonrealist accounts to accommodate novel success and constructs a deft realist explanation of novelty. To test the applicability of novel success as a standard of warrant for theories, Leplin examines current directions in theoretical physics, fashioning a powerful critique of currently developing standards of evaluation.

is a Belgian comic book series by Philippe Francq and Jean Van Hamme, published by Dupuis. Largo Winch started as a series of novels by Jean Van Hamme in the late 1970's, but stopped due to a lack of success and the huge amount of work Van Hamme had in the meantime with his comic books (e.g. ). When Francq wanted to start a series with Van Hamme, he revived his old hero, and reworked the novels into the first albums of the comic series. Later, new stories followed. The albums are more or less based on the same basic plot: someone is trying to harm Largo's company or to take control of it from him, and he has to fight that someone to ensure the survival of his holdings. All the stories of the series are published in two volumes, the first one being the one putting Largo in an impossible situation, and the second one letting him get out of it. In addition, both volumes share the same background color on the cover. The stories appear originally in French (among the most popular, in fact), and Cinebook has translated Largo Winch into English and has released them in single-issue books of 2 stories at a time. Graphic and explicit. Mature Readers.

Scientific Evidence And Equal Protection of the Law

Scientific Evidence And Equal Protection of the Law

Instant Info Riches
Publisher: Rutgers University Press | ISBN-10: 0813537347 | edition February 25, 2006 | PDF | 190 pages | 1.02 mb

Scientific and social scientific evidence has informed judicial decisions and the making of constitutional law for decades, but for much of U.S. history it has also served as a rhetorical device to justify inequality. It is only in recent years that scientific and statistical research has helped redress discrimination. Scientific Evidence and Equal Protection of the Law provides unique insights into the judicial process and scientific inquiry by examining major decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court, advocacy efforts, and the nature of science itself. Angelo Ancheta discusses leading equal protection cases such as Brown v. Board of Education and recent litigation involving race-related affirmative action, gender inequality, and discrimination based on sexual orientation. He also examines less prominent, but equally compelling cases, including McCleskey v. Kemp, which involved statistical evidence that the death penalty was disproportionately used when the victim was white, and Castaneda v. Partida, which ruled on the exclusion of Latinos from grand jury selection in Texas. For each case, Ancheta explores the tensions between scientific findings and constitutional values. Reliance on science in constitutional interpretation remains controversial. Some scholars and members of the judiciary argue for the limited use of scientific evidence, while others advocate for more extensive use. This book surveys and explains this conflict and also suggests changes in the ways that judicial decisions are made that could help to remedy some of the current deficiencies.

The maestro of pulse-pounding suspense delivers an explosive new white-knuckle thriller featuring deputy U.S. Marshal Tim Rackley – a lawman driven by honor, morality, and a thirst for justice. The leader of one of the country's most violent biker gangs, Den Laurey should have been behind bars. But thanks to a daring escape on an L.A. freeway, several deputy marshals are dead and Laurey is riding free. Rackley, back on the Service's warrant squad, is in hot pursuit of the outlaw and his ruthless gang – with a media whirlwind and the entire Los Angeles law-enforcement community driving him.

Just when Laurey is within his grasp, circumstances force Rackley to let him go – with devastating results. A few miles up the road, a sheriff's deputy is attacked: Tim's pregnant wife, Dray. Driven by guilt, Tim vows to hunt Laurey down – a search that will lead him into a dark world of deception and lies, a world of criminals and undercover cops, drugs and mutilation. And the key to the violent puzzle lies in the discarded corpses of women – women for whom Tim must seek justice when no one else will. With the stakes rising, Tim must unravel a horrifying secret and confront a deadly terror that reaches from the back alleys of Mexico to the poppy fields of Afghanistan … and threatens to explode on the dark streets of L.A.

James J. Corbett defeated John L. Sullivan to become the heavyweight champion of the world. Using his own "scientific boxing" techniques, Corbett delivered a blistering lesson to the previously unbeatable Sullivan, ending the fight with a knockout in the 21st round. With Corbett's win, a new era in boxing began. Corbett is considered by many to be the "father of modern boxing" for being the first person to apply scientific principles to the art of pugilism. In Scientific Boxing, the creator of such boxing innovations as the "left hook" distills his scientific methodology into an accessible manual of boxing techniques. This classic book contains sections on fundamental boxing techniques, fouling techniques, and the various boxing rules of his time.
