Since its original appearance in 1977, Advanced Organic Chemistry has found wide use as a text providing broad coverage of the structure, reactivity and synthesis of organic compounds. The Fourth Edition provides updated material but continues the essential elements of the previous edition. The material in Part A is organized on the basis of fundamental structural topics such as structure, stereochemistry, conformation and aromaticity and basic mechanistic types, including nucleophilic substitution, addition reactions, carbonyl chemistry, aromatic substitution and free radical reactions. The material in Part B is organized on the basis of reaction type with emphasis on reactions of importance in laboratory synthesis. As in the earlier editions, the text contains extensive references to both the primary and review literature and provides examples of data and reactions that illustrate and document the generalizations. While the text assumes completion of an introductory course in organic chemistry, it reviews the fundamental concepts for each topic that is discussed.

Chemistry is defined as the study of matter and its properties. With regard to this definition, the roots of the study of chemistry can be traced back to more than one ancient civilization. Most notably, the Greeks and Chinese each independently postulated thousands of years ago that there must be a small number of elemental substances from which all other things were created as admixtures. Remarkably, both civilizations theorized that air, earth, water, and fire were among those elements. It was much more recently, however—just about 300 years ago—that famed French nobleman and chemist Antoine Lavoisier correctly identified one of the elements experimentally.

Hornback was born and raised in southwestern Ohio. He received a B.S. degree in chemistry, magna cum laude, form the University of Notre Dame in 1965. He then attended the Ohio State University on an NSF traineeship and received his Ph.D. in 1968. He then moved to the University of Wisconsin on an NIH postdoctoral fellowship. In 1970, Joe joined the chemistry faculty at the University of Denver, where he is now Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry. His research interests are in the areas of synthetic organic chemistry and organic photochemistry. He has served in a number of administrative positions, including Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Associate Dean for Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering, and Director of the Honors Program. His first love has always been teaching and he has taught organic chemistry nearly every term, even when he was an administrator. He has received the Natural Science Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Outstanding Academic Advising Award.

What enters your mind when you hear the words "organic chemistry"? Some of you may think "the chemistry of life" or "the chemistry of carbon". Other responses might include "pre-med", "pressure", "difficult" or "memorization". Although formally the study of the compounds of carbon, the discipline of organic chemistry encompasses many skills that are common to other areas of study. Organic chemistry is as much a liberal art as a science, and mastery of the concepts and techniques of organic chemistry can lead to improve competence in other fields.

For a very long time the need was felt by graduate and postgraduate students of Chemistry of almost all colleges and of Indian Universities for a book dealing with advanced mechanistic organic chemistry written in understandable language and with suitable examples which can be easily grasped to make their concept clear. Besides students; this has also been the requirement of teachers teaching advanced mechanistic organic chemistry.; Till about 1959 there appears to be the only book by E.S. Gould (Structure and Mechanism of Organic Chemistry) but the examples mentioned in it are so difficult at several places that they elude the comprehension of even teachers; not to talk of students. Around sixties appeared the book by Jerry March (Advanced Organic Chemistry; Reactions; Mechanism and Structure). It was definitely a much better advance than that of Gould; but it has been made so bulky that its cost has become prohibitive.

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Second Edition - the first mechanistic-oriented book written at a level that organic chemistry students will understand! Specifically, the focus on mechanisms is a unifying theme, rather then just an organizing principle. Organizationally mainstream, it is unique in bringing in mechanisms as a unifying principle, and reactions are organized by mechanism type not by functional groups. And now, text/media integration has never been so seamless with the introduction of Organic ChemistryNow for ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Second Edition.

The control of reactivity to achieve specific syntheses is one of the overarching goals of organic chemistry. In the decade since the publication of the third edition, major advances have been made in the development of efficient new methods, particularly catalytic processes, and in means for control of reaction stereochemistry. This volume assumes a level of familiarity with structural and mechanistic concepts comparable to that in the companion volume, Part A, Structures and Mechanisms. Together, the two volumes are intended to provide the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student in chemistry with a sufficient foundation to comprehend and use the research literature in organic chemistry.

Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry book applies to McMurry: It works!

Knowledge of organic chemistry continues to move ahead on many fronts. New journals continue to appear and older ones increase in frequency of publication and/or in number of papers published. This fourth edition of Advanced Organic Chemistry has been thoroughly revised to reflect this growth. Every topic retained from the third edition has been brought up to date. Changes, ranging from minor to extensive, have been made on virtually every page of the third edition. More than 5000 references have been added. However, no changes were made in the organization: The structure of the fourth edition is essentially the same as that of the second and the third. Like the first three editions, the fourth is intended to be a textbook for a course in advanced organic chemistry taken by students who have had the standard undergraduate organic and physical chemistry courses.

The central message of chemistry is that the properties of a substance come from its structure. What is less obvious, but very powerful, is the corollary. Someone with training in chemistry can look at the structure of a substance and tell you a lot about its properties. Organic chemistry has always been, and continues to be, the branch of chemistry that best connects structure with properties.
